Sporting goods stores aren’t the only place to shop when looking to buy something that will help a teenager lose weight. In fact, items that can help your teen’s weight-loss efforts are found in places you might not expect, such as electronics stores. A healthy diet and increased activity are the main ingredients for successful weight loss, so it makes sense to buy things that fall into these categories.

Video Games

Some video game consoles feature a wireless technology that enables players to control the game by performing physical motions similar to the activity that’s taking place onscreen. This type of video gaming was not intended for weight loss, but it has helped produce it as a byproduct. As a result of this technology, some companies have produced video games that are geared toward weight loss. This type of video game, which is something you can buy your teen to help him lose weight, uses a balance board upon which players stand while performing a variety of activities, including aerobics and strength training exercises. The video game measures your center of balance, Body Mass Index and body control and uses this data to produce a fitness age, a representation of how your teen’s current fitness level compares to his chronological age.

Portable Music

If boredom is an excuse your teen uses for not exercising, then it’s time for a portable music player. Music is an effective tool that keeps teens and adults entertained while exercising. Whether it’s walking, biking or jogging, adding music to an exercise routine will benefit your teen in several ways. In a report published by the United States Sports Academy, studies have shown that music produces a variety of benefits in relation to sports and exercising, including synchronization, motivation and the acquisition of motor skills. Music helps the participant establish a pace that is ideal for helping them complete the routine. Music can create states of mental and emotional arousal that will provide your teen with the motivation needed to start, maintain and finish the activity.

Food

One of the best things you can buy your teen to help her lose weight is healthy food. Filling the pantry with chips, cookies and cupcakes does nothing but contribute to an overweight condition. High-fat meats and sugary drinks only litter your refrigerator with food choices that encourage your teen to make unhealthful choices at meal times. Low-fat meats, high-fiber cereals and breads and non-fat milk can help teach your teen to make healthier food choices. Stocking your refrigerator with a wide variety of fruits and vegetables will provide your teen with low-calorie and nutritious alternatives that will help her lose weight and develop lifelong habits.

Clothes

While clothes won’t help your teenager lose weight, they can provide the motivation needed to make changes that lead to losing weight. For example, reward your teen for exercising three times a week for an entire month by buying her a stylish blouse she’s had her eye on for awhile. Or maybe buy her a new skirt for eating at least five fruits and vegetables a day for a month. Longterm motivation might include a pair of expensive shoes for losing a predetermined amount of weight.

Exercise Equipment

You could also go the traditional route and buy your teen exercise equipment to help in his weight loss efforts. Dumbbells provide an opportunity to tone and strengthen muscles, while a jump rope can do the same while providing your teen with an effective cardiovascular activity. The Jump Rope Institute reports that 10 minutes of rapid rope jumping burns as many calories as a 30-minute jog, 18 holes of golf and 720 yards of swimming. A bike, mobile or stationary, is another tool that can help your teen lose weight while increasing his fitness level at the same time.
