Cod liver oil is beneficial for both children and adults; however, it may be too potent for infants. Cod liver oil is high in omega-3 and also in vitamin A and D, vitamins that help support your infant’s immune system, teeth, vision and bone development. Consult a pediatrician before giving your infant cod liver oil because of the possibility of adverse reactions.

Dosage

A teaspoon of cod liver oil provides more than the adequate intake for vitamins A and D due to its potency. According to the Institutes of Health, the recommended intake of vitamin A for an infant 6 months and under is 400 micrograms per day, while infants between the ages of 7 and 12 months require 500 micrograms per day. A teaspoon of cod liver oil provides 1,350 micrograms. The recommended intake of vitamin D for an infant 6 months and under is 10 micrograms; infants 7 to 10 months, it's 5 micrograms a day. A teaspoon of cod liver oil provides 11.2 micrograms of vitamin D.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

According to MayoClinic.com, omega-3 fatty acids are available in some infant formulas, although a recommended dosage has not been established. Infants and children should consume a limited amount of fish because of the possibility of contaminants such as mercury. According to MayoClinic.com, fish oil supplements should not be taken by young people unless directed by a doctor.

Benefits

Cod liver oil contains the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid. Among the well-known benefits of cod liver oil are its functions in preventing rickets and increasing brain function in infants and children.

Research

In a study published in the December 2003 issue of "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," the Norwegian Childhood Diabetes Study Group found that the use of cod liver oil for infants was associated with a significant reduction in the risk of type 1 diabetes, possibly because of anti-inflammatory properties in omega-3 fatty acids. However, the researchers do not specify a recommended dosage of cod liver oil.

Considerations

A common side effect of cod liver oil is nausea. Infant formulas often contain cod liver oil or omega-3 fatty acids. Breastfeeding an infant will also provide adequate amounts of cod liver oil if the mother is taking the recommended dosage.
