While even small amounts of physical activity are beneficial, you'll get the most benefit if you exercise on a regular basis. But finding the motivation to exercise can be more difficult than actually exercising, especially if a hectic work schedule, busy social life or active family leaves you short on time and energy.

Step 1

Commit to a program. Dedicate 30 minutes to an hour each day and let your family and friends know you're unavailable at this time. Set an alarm on your phone or mark the time on your calender so you'll be reminded each day.

Step 2

Recruit friends to exercise with you. Exercising with friends makes the time go faster. Friends can also help keep you accountable and encourage you to go to the gym when you're low on motivation.

Step 3

Choose activities you enjoy. If you don't like the gym, swim in a pool or at the beach, join a sports team or find a dance class. If exercise is fun, it will feel less like work and more like play.

Step 4

Consult your doctor to evaluate your health. Learning that exercise may help prevent or reverse high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and other chronic illnesses can serve as a powerful motivator.

Step 5

Revise your goals so you can experience successes more often. Instead of vowing to lose 100 pounds, make it a goal to lose 10 pounds, then reward yourself when you succeed. Start work immediately on your next 10-pound goal.

Tips and Warnings

  • Keep a journal and identify any barriers, obstacles or negative thought patterns that keep you from exercising.
