Releana Protocol is a sub-lingual HCG formula used in conjunction with a HCG weight loss program. HCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin, is a pregnancy hormone that is also marketed for diet and weight loss. Proponents of these weight loss plans claim that HCG boosts metabolism, but critics note that the hormone has not been approved by the Federal Drug Administration for weight loss purposes.
Releana was developed by Dierdre S. Tuntland, a weight loss expert who patented this sub-lingual formula of the HCG hormone in October 2009. The Releana Protocol website promotes the formula as, "the only patented, medical grade, sub-lingual delivery system in the United States." As with other HCG diet and weight loss programs, Releana is used in conjunction with a very low calorie diet plan for a period of 21 to 40 days. The liquid supplements of Releana are used to encourage fat burning and to decrease hunger.
Calorie Guidelines and Food Options
Daily calorie intake on a Releana diet plan is restricted to between 500 and 800 calories; food guidelines are extremely strict. Meals can include mainly lean protein, such as chicken, turkey or fish, leafy green vegetables such as spinach, kale, mixed lettuces and broccoli, and fruits such as apples, oranges or grapefruits. Beverage options include water, tea and coffee.
Restricted Foods
Carbohydrates are strictly eliminated on a Releana diet program. All breads, pastas and cereals must be avoided. Dieters must also eliminate any packaged or processed foods such as snacks, baked goods, candies, soda or fast food items that contain high amounts of saturated fats and sugars. Starchy vegetables and fruits, such as corn, potatoes and bananas, are also eliminated during the low-calorie diet plan.
Expert Insights
The company promoting the use of Releana for weight loss notes that this product is processed to "U.S. lab standards" and only available by prescription. Yet, MayoClinic.com has noted that HCG supplements, in general, have not been found to increase weight loss and products are neither monitored nor approved by the FDA. MayoClinic.com also notes that most weight loss that occurs on an HCG diet plan is likely due to the very low-calorie restrictions rather than the use of HCG supplements. As dieters transition from this low-calorie diet back to their normal eating habits, they are likely to regain the weight they lost on the plan.
