Bodybuilding is a rewarding self-improvement pursuit that can increase strength and improve self-esteem. Bodybuilding requires dedication and study before you ever pick up a weight. If you have engaged in bodybuilding activities in the past, take a few things into account before you resume training.

See a Physician

The most important thing to do before resuming a bodybuilding routine is to see a physician to make sure you are healthy enough for training. Hidden problems such as diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure may be present and only your doctor can tell you for sure. None of these conditions necessarily prevent you from pursuing a bodybuilding regime, but a physician can advise you how to go about it safely to avoid serious complications or even death.

Use Your Head

It may be tempting to simply hit the gym without a plan, but for best results, spend some time thinking how and where you want to train and what you will need to achieve your goals. For example, Iron Man Magazine advises beginners who prefer to work out at home to choose a 110-pound weight set with extra weights, a chin-up bar, an adjustable bench and a leg extension/curl. Perhaps joining a local gym is a better option. The bottom line is you need to know why you want to train. Be honest: Do you want to push your limits, improve your health, impress your friends or enter competitions? Knowing why you want to bodybuild helps you set goals you can keep.

Establish a Routine

Muscle and Fitness, Bodybuilding.com and Flexonline have online routines for beginners who work out in a gym, but these are just a few of the available options. Joining a gym with personal training services is also a good way get into a routine. Hiring a trainer to guide you through your initial routines is a good option but not necessary. Scheduling appointments with a trainer or setting up workout dates with a friend can help you establish your routine and motivate you to keep to your schedule.

Don't Give Up

Starting a bodybuilding routine after a break can be a daunting experience. Expect it to be hard at first, but, once you get through that initial period, things do get easier. Muscle and Fitness says that the most important thing is to establish a routine and stick with it. The website warns that the first month's routine is the most difficult to establish, but once you have created it, it is easier to keep going. If you have been a bodybuilder in the past, you know the rewards are worth the effort. Stick with it.
