Strengthening the calf muscles can be done by using a variety of activities and exercises, including running, weightlifting, stretching and swimming. These muscles play an important role in the performance of many everyday activities, such as walking, twisting, turning and stooping, so strengthening them should be part of any exercise routine.

Running

With every step you take, whether walking or running, your calves lift at least your body weight while propelling you forward. Get them to work together while engaged in an exercise routine that involves running, and you’ve got an effective way to strengthen these vital muscles. Running is an exercise that doesn’t require expensive equipment and can be done on a variety of surfaces, including tracks, treadmills and streets. If starting a distance-running regimen, set a goal for a distance you are certain you can reach. It’s easy to let your enthusiasm for a new workout routine guide you to setting unrealistic and unattainable goals. Gradually increasing your distance running routine is the most effective way to strengthen your calf muscles while increasing endurance.

Stretching

Stretching is an effective way to strengthen your calf muscles while limbering them up for other activities, such as running. Calf stretches can be done without the use of equipment through an assortment of exercises, such as calf stretching against a wall, ankle circles and a seated calf stretch. Stretching increases the blood flow to the muscles, making them more responsive to workouts and, in the process, helping them gain muscle mass, which translates to strength.

Weightlifting

Adding resistance to your calf workouts will help you strengthen them and can be done using a variety of exercises, including donkey calf raises, standing barbell calf raises and rocking standing calf raises. Calf workouts should include routines that include strengthening the other leg muscles that work with the calves, such as the quadriceps and hamstrings. Several weightlifting exercises, such as full squats and barbell step-ups, are designed to focus on the quadriceps but also provide an effective workout for the calves at the same time.

Swimming

Swimming laps using any of the major strokes, such as breaststroke and freestyle, is another way to strengthen your calf muscles. As your upper-body muscles provide you with the pull needed to swim, your lower-body muscles, including your calves, produce the push aspect of this exercise. With your toes in a pointed position, each kick of the leg works your quadriceps, calves and hamstring in collaborative movements that, with repeated frequency, will lead to stronger muscles.
