Everyone knows exercise is good for your health, but sometimes it's tough to find the motivation to work out. Sixty percent of Americans don't get enough physical activity, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Getting off the couch can be especially difficult if you're exhausted or don't enjoy working out. However, making physical activity more fun and reminding yourself why you exercise can help get you on your feet and moving.

Step 1

Make plans to exercise with a friend, neighbor or relative. You'll be less likely to back down if you know a buddy is counting on you.

Step 2

Choose a form of exercise you enjoy, such as walking your dog, dancing, practicing yoga, riding a bike, playing catch with your kids or gardening.

Step 3

Set manageable goals with nonfood rewards. For example, promise yourself a half-hour massage, fresh flowers or a new pair of shoes if you exercise five days a week for two weeks. Write down your goals and post them in a highly visible spot, such as on your bathroom mirror or refrigerator.

Step 4

Remind yourself that you'll have more energy after you exercise. And remember that exercise builds muscle, which, in turn, burns more calories.

Step 5

Write down the benefits of exercise. For example, it will help you feel better, look better, feel more confident when you meet old friends, have more energy and live longer. Look at your list when you feel unmotivated.

Step 6

Experiment with exercising at different times of the day. You might have more energy in the morning or perhaps right after work.

Step 7

Prepare for your workout. For example, if you plan to go jogging after work, set out your exercise clothes and shoes in the morning and put your water bottle in the refrigerator to chill.
