Zumba is the dance-fitness style brought to Miami from Colombia in 2001 that boasts millions of followers around the world. Its energetic moves and music have made it popular, piquing the interest of those wanting to lose weight. Losing weight requires a lot of effort, but adding new activities, like Zumba, keeps you interested and on track to meet your goals.
Zumba Basics
Zumba routines rely heavily on Latin music, particularly merengue, salsa and cumbia, but also incorporate other international genres such as belly dancing. Hip shaking moves work the core, while the fitness break-downs exercise the legs and arms. Zumba's music moves from fast to slow following an interval training philosophy. Different types of Zumba include DVDs and video games, Zumba classes, Zumba Gold for seniors and Aqua Zumba. (ref. 1)
Weight Loss Goals
Creating a calorie deficit through reducing extra calories from eating and drinking and increasing physical activity is the key component of losing weight. Increasing your physical activity through Zumba, which burns 688 calories an hour in a 170-lb. person, can indeed make you lose weight. Setting realistic goals and making a fitness plan, which can include Zumba, provides the best chance of weight loss success.
Crank Up the Intensity
Increasing your intensity ensures you get the most benefits out of your workouts. You burn an optimal amount of calories during your Zumba session if you are really working the entire time. Aiming to get your heart rate up to 70 to 85 percent of your maximum during your Zumba session to gain the weight loss benefits of vigorous exercise.
Stick to It
Zumba is not a quick-fix for weight loss, but a tool for it. Follow your plan, but don't forget to make small goals and reassess your long-term goals along the way. Zumba instructor Angela Pyles inspires students to reach their goals with this mantra: "Zumba is what one puts into it. Stick to it and you will see great results!"
