Prosciutto is an Italian cured ham that has a strong salty flavor and a soft texture that melts in your mouth. It generally is served raw, thinly sliced and cold. You can add it to salads, sandwiches and pizzas. However, adding it to dishes that you roast in the oven brings out the salty flavor and adds a slight sweetness to the meat. Prosciutto will give any roasted dish you make an extra depth of flavor.
Roasted Asparagus Wrapped in Prosciutto
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Coat the baking sheet with a thin layer of olive oil.
Step 2
Take each asparagus and break off the bottom part. Gently bend the asparagus stalk, and it will break off where it needs to -- about 1 inch from the bottom. If the outer layer of the asparagus feels tough, peel it using a vegetable peeler.
Step 3
Wrap each asparagus stalk with one slice of prosciutto starting at the top and ending at the bottom. Place the stalks on the greased baking sheet and sprinkle with freshly ground black pepper.
Step 4
Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, flipping once. The prosciutto will be crisp and the asparagus will be slightly tender. Serve immediately as a side dish or appetizer.
Gorgonzola Stuffed Prosciutto Wrapped Dates
Step 1
Using a knife, cut the stem off of each of the 25 figs. Make an opening in each fig by cutting a slice 1/2-inch deep and then rotating it 90 degrees and making another 1/2-inch slice.
Step 2
Cut the Gorgonzola into 24 equal pieces and cut the prosciutto slices in half lengthwise so that you have 24 slices.
Step 3
Place one piece of cheese into the opening of a fig. Wrap the stuffed fig with one slice of prosciutto, leaving the top exposed. Repeat with the rest of the figs.
Step 4
Melt the butter and lightly brush it over each stuffed fig with a pastry brush.
Step 5
Set your oven to broil. Coat the baking sheet with cooking spray, and place the wrapped figs on the baking sheet -- exposed side up. Place the cooking sheet in the oven and cook for five to 10 minutes or until the prosciutto is crisp and the cheese has melted. Serve immediately.
