The edges of the snowboard feature a sharpened design that often is reinforced with stainless steel or carbon fiber. These specialized edges allow the board to penetrate the snow during hairpin turns and high-velocity maneuvers. Turning with the toe edge of your snowboard is an essential technique because it allows you to navigate around any hazards in the riding terrain. When practicing the toe-side turn, ABC-of-Snowboarding recommends keeping your shoulders parallel with the deck of the snowboard.
Step 1
Choose a mellow slope that features a groomed terrain when practicing your toe-side turns. Ride forward with your non-dominant foot in the lead position. Bend your knees to a 45-degree angle to lower your center of gravity.
Step 2
Extend your arms for balance as you reach a comfortable momentum. Survey your surroundings prior to the turn to ensure the coast is clear. Lean forward while sliding your feet toward the back of your boots.
Step 3
Apply downward pressure to dig the toe edge of your board into the snow. Keep the heel edge of your snowboard elevated to prevent unnecessary drag. Rotate your head in the direction of the turn as you traverse the mountain slope.
Step 4
Align your shoulders with the snowboard deck while executing the toe-side turn. Shift your body weight onto the opposing edge of the snowboard as you begin to lose momentum. Connect your toe-side and heel-side turns to navigate your way down the mountain.
