After unsheathing a new snowboard, beginners often make the mistake of attempting freestyle tricks in the terrain park. Without the proper detuning technique, the sharpened edges of your new snowboard will catch on the metallic rails and fiberglass boxes. According to Transworld Snowboarding, rounding the edges of your board with a coarse file will allow you to perform grinds and slides with ease. Perform the detuning process at home to avoid costly bills at your local snowboarding shop.
Step 1
Place your snowboard sideways onto a level worktable to begin the detuning process. Hold the metallic file on the toe edge of your snowboard at a 45-degree angle. Rub the file back and forth along the edge with a long, fluid stroke.
Step 2
Repeat the process until the sharpened edge retains a smooth, rounded shape. Place the metallic file onto the heel edge of your new snowboard at a 45-degree angle. Thrust the file in a rhythmic motion to dull the heel edge of your snowboard.
Step 3
Lower the metallic file onto the widest section of the snowboard's nose. Rub the file along the sharpened edge to dull the contact points. Repeat the detuning process along the tail of your new snowboard.
Step 4
Rub a diamond stone around the entire circumference of the snowboard to complete the detuning technique. Wipe away any shards of fiberglass with a soft cotton cloth.
