Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common -- and costly -- musculoskeletal health problem involving compression of your median nerve at your wrist. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke states that carpal tunnel syndrome is a common cause of lost work, and that the average lifetime cost of this health problem is about $30,000 per injured worker. Certain supplements, including essential fatty acids, may be useful in treating carpal tunnel syndrome, but you should always consult with your family physician before using these natural substances.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the leading causes of hand pain and numbness, reports the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and it is more common in women than men. Most cases of carpal tunnel syndrome are caused by several factors. Possible causes of this musculoskeletal health problem include heredity, hormonal changes associated with pregnancy, excessive hand use, advanced age and certain chronic health problems, such as thyroid disorders, rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes.

About EFAs

Essential fatty acids, or EFAs, are fatty acids that your body requires for optimal health but cannot itself produce. Your body requires two EFAs, notes the Linus Pauling Institute: linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid. EFAs are found in abundance in certain foods, including flaxseeds, olive oil and fish such as salmon and tuna. EFAs are also found in significant quantities in processed fish oil supplements. EFAs are used by your body to help make cell membranes and for numerous other purposes. These substances are the building blocks for all fats within your body.

EFA Actions and Uses

EFAs may be helpful in treating your carpal tunnel syndrome. According to Phyllis A. Balch, a certified nutritional consultant and author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," EFAs are required by your body for proper nerve function and for their potent anti-inflammatory effects. A 2010 study by G.D. Ko and colleagues published in the "Clinical Journal of Pain" states that omega-3 fatty acids, a type of essential fatty acid, may be helpful in managing neuropathic pain, such as the pain caused by carpal tunnel syndrome.

Disclaimer

Carpal tunnel syndrome, though not a life-threatening health problem, may cause significant discomfort and lost work time. This musculoskeletal problem may lead to nerve damage in some people that can manifest as irreversible hand numbness, weakness and tingling. In most cases, carpal tunnel syndrome responds to conservative care methods, including nutritional supplements. Avoid taking supplements for this health problem until you have reviewed the possible side effects and drug interactions with your primary care provider.
