You can have a delayed period for a variety of reasons. If you’re young, your period may not begin as soon as peers. MedlinePlus reports that most young women begin their period no later than between the ages of 14 to 16, and the average age to begin menstruation is 13 years. Once you’ve experienced normal, or regular, menstrual cycles, a delay between cycles can be due to stress, anxiety, hormonal imbalances and other factors. If you're concerned about a delayed menstrual cycle, talk to your health care provider.
Fish Oil
There is no evidence that fish oil or fish oil supplements will delay your period. Fish oil and fish oil supplements may, however, ease the pain associated with premenstrual syndrome and menstrual cramps, according to MayoClinic.com. More research is needed to scientifically prove this claim, but the theory behind it is that fish oil and omega-3 fatty acids possess anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation can exacerbate pain and discomfort, especially for some women during their menstrual cycle.
Other Causes
Other common causes of a delayed period include excessive exercise, drastic weight loss or gain, eating disorders, hormonal imbalances and pregnancy. Medications that can delay your period or alter your regular menstrual cycle include birth control pills, birth control shots and other medicines that contain hormones. Certain endocrine disorders, such as a pituitary tumor or thyroid disease, can disrupt a normal menstrual cycle. Women over the age of 45 may begin to experience menopause, according to MedlinePlus, which can also affect the menstrual cycle.
Prevention/Solution
If you believe that medication is delaying your period, talk to your doctor to address the problem and determine if you should switch medications. If you are not on any medications that could alter your menstrual cycle, make an appointment with your doctor. You may need testing to rule out medical conditions that involves your ovaries, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome or tumors. If the cause of your delayed period is excessive exercise, decrease the length or amount of time that you exercise each day.
Considerations
If you have not started your period by the age of 14 and show no other signs of puberty, such as pubic hair or breast growth, tell your doctor. Some girls may not begin their period until age 16 but will show other signs of puberty before menstruating.
