How to Grill Tempeh

Tempeh is an Indonesian food made from cooked and fermented soybeans. It is often formed into patties and eaten as an alternative to meat. Although similar to tofu, tempeh is more textured and has a distinct nutty flavor. You may purchase tempeh at health food stores or at specialty Asian markets. It is usually available in a cubed block that you can easily slice for dishes.

Step 1

Slice 1 1/2 inch thick slices of tempeh with a sharp knife and set on a plate. Flavor the tempeh with your choice of seasoning, including salt, pepper and garlic.

Step 2

Coat your grill rack with nonstick cooking spray or vegetable oil. Preheat the grill to a medium-heat setting if using a gas grill.

Step 3

Place the tempeh slices on the grill with tongs. Grill on each side for 3 minutes, or until lightly browned. If you choose, you can bast the tempeh with your choice of marinade.

Step 4

Take the tempeh slices off of the grill and serve in your meal.
