Adjusting to a new denture is a learning process that can take several weeks or even months. When you first begin wearing a lower denture, you might have trouble with sore spots, speaking and particularly eating, but there are several things you can do to make the transition easier and learn to enjoy your favorite foods. Discuss your denture concerns with your dentist, particularly if it feels uncomfortable or you develop mouth sores.

Step 1

Start with soft foods when you first begin wearing a lower denture, and cut your food into bite-sized pieces to help you learn how to chew properly.

Step 2

Chew slowly, and try to use both sides of your mouth to prevent your denture from slipping up on one side.

Step 3

Focus on using your cheek and tongue muscles to help you keep your denture in place as you chew. Lower dentures have a tendency to slip with mouth movement, so retraining your muscles helps overcome this problem.

Step 4

Place your tongue along the inner surface of your denture when eating to help hold it in place. If your tongue moves around too much, so will your denture.

Step 5

Bite down on soft foods once you’ve learned to chew properly while keeping your denture in place. Using your front teeth to bite can cause your denture to slip over the ridge of your gums, so try using the center of your mouth.
