Hormonal changes in the body sometimes contribute to changes in your weight and body fat percentage. Some minor change over time is normal, but changes relating to the thyroid can send weight levels fluctuating considerably. So, too, can the supplements used to correct these imbalances, and you should monitor how the body changes in response to the treatments.

Thyroid Gland

The thyroid is a gland located just above the collarbone, in your neck. It is a hormone-producing gland and one of several in the endocrine system, according to Medline Plus. Your thyroid in particular influences your metabolism, which in turn affects your nutritional health, energy levels and body weight.

Thyroid Imbalances

If you develop hypothyroidism, marked by a low amount of thyroid hormone being released from the gland, you are at risk of gaining weight -- not from the supplements used to treat the condition, but from the condition itself. By contrast, hyperthyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland produces excessive amounts of thyroid hormone. This can lead to rapid weight loss, and the supplements used to correct this imbalance can sometimes reverse the weight loss as well.

Anti-Thyroid Medications

Hyperthyroidism is often treated with medications that slow the thyroid's release of hormones. Because you are reducing the amount of thyroid hormone in the body, it is possible that you will experience some weight gain -- particularly if you have lost a significant amount of weight due to a hyperactive thyroid. However, it's unlikely that this treatment will cause you to become fat, though you may gain weight beyond what the condition caused you to lose in the first place.

Considerations

If you find yourself gaining weight through the use of thyroid supplements or treatments, talk to your doctor. Some weight gain is probably not a major concern, but it is abnormal for you to gain large amounts of fat on the body. Do not rule out other factors affecting weight, including your diet and activity level. Do not change your consumption of supplements without first getting permission from your doctor.
