Many novice snowboarders gravitate toward freestyle riding techniques after perfecting the elementary turns and maneuvers. Commonly defined as slope-style, freestyle snowboarding takes place in a customized obstacle course known as the terrain park. The board slide is an intermediate freestyle trick that can be performed on metallic rails and fiberglass boxes. Beginners often feel more comfortable with the backside board slide because it allows you to keep your chest facing forward. According to the Snow Professor, choosing an appropriate obstacle will allow you to master the board slide with ease.

Step 1

Choose a beginner snowboard box that features a width of one to two feet. Select a box that has a smooth takeoff and landing ramp. Opt for a flat box as this will aid in the learning process.

Step 2

Ride toward the obstacle with your non-dominant foot in the lead position. Bend your knees to balance your snowboarding stance. Approach the takeoff ramp with a moderate amount of speed to avoid sliding out.

Step 3

Shift your body weight onto the heel edge of the snowboard as you ascend the takeoff ramp. Extend your legs to jump as you reach the apex of the takeoff ramp. Rotate your snowboard 90 degrees with your chest pointing toward the end of the obstacle.

Step 4

Align the underside of your snowboard over the box in a perpendicular position. Bend your knees as the snowboard descends onto the obstacle. Lean forward while extending your arms for balance.

Step 5

Keep your shoulders parallel with the snowboard as you slide across the box. Rotate your snowboard 90 degrees as you slide off the end of the obstacle. Practice the board slide technique until you can land the trick on a consistent basis.
