Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that can leave your face speckled with blemishes such as whiteheads or cysts. Conventional treatments for acne include over-the-counter remedies such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. Some natural remedies, such as the spice turmeric, may also be beneficial in preventing and treating breakouts. However, more research is needed on turmeric’s benefit for acne. Consult a dermatologist for more advice.

Benefits of Turmeric for Acne

Turmeric, or Curcuma longa, is a common ingredient in curry powder. It contains potent antioxidant compounds called curcuminoids, which help to prevent free-radical damage to cells and tissues. When cells and tissues suffer damage, inflammation increases. Therefore, turmeric also has significant anti-inflammatory properties, which may make it beneficial for acne. Although there is no general recommended daily intake for turmeric, Nicholas Perricone, a dermatologist and author of “The Acne Prescription,” suggests taking between 250 to 1,000 milligrams daily to help improve acne.

Research

Although there is not a large body of research on the effects of turmeric for acne, one study published in the journal “Pharmaceutical Biology” in August 2011 suggested that the spice can be beneficial. In the study, researchers from India tested the effects of an herbal face wash containing turmeric, two polymers -- Carbopol and hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose -- and extracts from Rauwolfia serpentina, or Indian snakeroot, and Azadirachta indica, or neem. They found that the gel had an antiacne effect and did not cause skin irritation. However, more studies are needed.

Recommendations

Before trying turmeric either orally or topically to treat acne, consult your dermatologist. Taken in large doses, turmeric can cause side effects such as stomach upset or stomach ulcers. People with diabetes should not take turmeric without medical advice as the spice can lower blood glucose levels. If you have gallstones or a bile disorder, also seek medical advice first. Keep in mind that any substance has the potential to cause a skin reaction in some people. Do a skin test first if you plan to apply turmeric topically to treat acne.

Considerations

In some cases, natural remedies or over-the-counter medications can help to keep acne under control. However, if acne persists, it’s best to consult a dermatologist for the most effective treatments. Your doctor may recommend other options such as antibiotics, or for severe acne, isotretinoin. Also, keep in mind that can take six to eight weeks of continuous treatment before you see improvements in your skin.
