Metal tools don't generally pick up odors from onions, but plastic or wooden tools can retain odors or stains from food. To prevent onion odors, wash utensils immediately after processing onions. Store cut onions in a plastic, disposable bag in the refrigerator, rather than plastic bowls. A gentle, natural remedy is usually all that's needed to remove onion odors. Reach for a common household cleaner, though, if the odor remains.

Step 1

Place the soiled utensils in a flat baking dish or tray. Pour fresh lemon juice over them and soak for 20 minutes. The fresh scent and high acid content of lemon juice is usually enough to remove odors.

Step 2

Mix baking soda with water and soak the utensils if the odor remains. Baking soda is a natural odor neutralizer that is safe and effective.

Step 3

Mix chlorine bleach with 2 cups water and soak the plastic utensils if other methods fail to remove the onion odor. Soak for no more than 10 minutes, though, and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Take care not to get the chlorine bleach on fabric or surfaces because it will bleach them.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat baking dish or bowl
  • 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 1/4 cup chlorine bleach
