Depression is a serious mood disorder that makes you feel like staying in bed all day, with little hope or energy do to anything else. While a number of treatments, such as antidepressants and psychotherapy, can help, some research has also found that cod liver oil and vitamin D3, found in Arctic-D cod liver oil, may also provide some benefits. Consult your doctor before using any dietary supplements.

About Arctic-D Cod Liver Oil

Arctic-D cod liver oil is a proprietary dietary supplement manufactured by Nordic Naturals. It contains a blend of vitamin D3 and cod liver oil, and is available in liquid form in lemon and orange flavor. According to the manufacturer's website, 1 tsp. contains 1,000 IU of vitamin D3, an easily absorbed form of vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids, including 410 mg of eicosapentaenoic acid, or EPA, and 625 mg of docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids help fight inflammation, assist with mood regulation and are crucial for maintaining a healthy nervous system. Vitamin D3 also has an impact on your mood and cognitive functioning.

Depression and Nutrition

Depression can seriously impact your mood and ability to function. You may experience symptoms such as a low mood, lack of self-esteem, insomnia, bodily aches and pains, appetite changes and irritability. Researchers aren't entirely sure what causes depression, although a number of factors, including certain nutritional deficits, are thought to play a role. In fact, the University of Maryland Medical Center notes that a deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids can lead to mood swings and depression. A lack of vitamin D can also adversely affect your mood and play a role in the development of depressive symptoms.

Clinical Evidence

There's no specific research on the uses of Arctic-D cod liver oil for depression. However, many studies have confirmed the benefits of cod liver oil and vitamin D supplementation for symptoms of depression. In fact, a study published in the August 2007 issue of the "Journal of Affective Disorders" examined cod liver use and depression in a population-based cross-sectional health survey from Norway including 21,835 adults. The researchers found that cod liver oil users had a much lower risk of depression than nonusers. Additionally, a review published in the July 19, 2007, issue of the "New England Journal of Medicine" reports a high incidence of depression in patients with a vitamin D deficiency.

Considerations

While dietary supplements containing vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids, like Arctic-D cod liver oil, may provide benefits for symptoms of depression, you should not attempt to self-treat your condition. If you think you are depressed, seek medical attention. Depression can become worse if left untreated. As with any dietary supplement, inform your doctor if you choose to Arctic-D cod liver oil.
