Why Is Sodium Biocarbonate Good for Heartburn?

Heartburn, often referred to as gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD, occurs when stomach acid moves up into your esophagus. The irritation that results from this acid reflux causes the burning and discomfort of heartburn. Sodium bicarbonate, also known as baking soda, works against this irritating acid and may help some people relieve the pain of occasional heartburn.

Acid Neutralization

According to Randy Martin, M.D., host of HealthWatchMD, sodium bicarbonate neutralizes the stomach acid that causes esophagus irritation and the painful symptoms of heartburn. This acid neutralization occurs because sodium bicarbonate is an alkaline substance. Those with occasional episodes of heartburn who do not need to take daily acid reducing pills may find sodium bicarbonate beneficial for the treatment of their occasional symptoms.

Using Sodium Bicarbonate

To use sodium bicarbonate as an acid neutralizer to treat an attack of heartburn, follow the directions that come with your powder or tablets to ensure proper dosage. If you're using powdered baking soda, dissolve the suggested amount in no less than 4 ounces of water. If you're using a tablet form of sodium bicarbonate, take it with a glass of water. MedlinePlus notes that you should take sodium bicarbonate one to two hours after a meal, and not on an extremely full stomach.

Precautions

Avoid ingesting sodium bicarbonate if you've taken other medication in the last one to two hours, as sodium bicarbonate may interfere with other medications. Taking sodium bicarbonate with milk or milk products may also cause unwanted side effects and should be avoided. Pregnant women should also avoid sodium bicarbonate, as it can interfere with vitamin and mineral absorption essential to healthy fetal development. Avoid baking soda and check with your doctor if you have symptoms of appendicitis or other medical issues. J. Patrick Waring, M.D., from Digestive Healthcare of Georgia in Atlanta further notes that the sodium in baking soda may not be healthy, particularly for those with high blood pressure, heart problems or kidney disease.

Considerations

While sodium bicarbonate may be good for occasional bouts of heartburn, it's not the only option. Randy Martin, M.D., also suggests chewing non-minted, sugar-free gum after a meal for about 20 to 30 minutes to stimulate saliva secretion. Martin notes that saliva, like baking soda, is also an alkaline that contains sodium bicarbonate, and it works similarly to decrease acid in the stomach. Additionally, if your heartburn symptoms continue even while taking sodium bicarbonate, see a doctor to discuss possible diet changes or stronger medications to control your heartburn.
