Step exercisers come in two basic types. Mechanical exercisers have a metal framework with foot pedals that elevate and descend on axles or movable arms. One-piece steps consist of a tread attached atop two support blocks, and you exercise by stepping on and off the tread. Making a mechanical exerciser requires numerous supplies, fabrication tools and metalwork expertise. The average do-it-yourself enthusiast can make a standard one-piece step with lumber and basic woodworking tools.
Step 1
Measure and mark a piece of 1-by-12-inch laminated pine 30 inches long. Square the marks with a framing square and pencil. Cut the piece with a circular saw.
Step 2
Measure and mark eight pieces of 2-by-12-inch utility lumber 8 inches long that make two supports for the tread. Each support consists of four pieces that you stack in a uniform manner.
Step 3
Assemble each layer of the supports by applying wood glue on the upper face of a piece and attaching another piece atop the previous with 2-inch wood screws spaced 4 inches apart. Drill pilot holes for each screw with a power drill and 1/16-inch drill bit to prevent splitting the wood. Drive the screws flush with the power drill and a screw-tip attachment.
Step 4
Place the 30-inch-long tread atop the supports. Align the 12-inch-long outer edges of each support with the ends of the tread.
Step 5
Drill four pilot holes through the face of the tread at each support. The holes are inset 2 inches from the outer edges of each support. Set the tread to one side.
Step 6
Apply wood glue to the tops of each support. Reposition the tread atop the supports and align the edges and ends of each. Attach the tread with 2-inch wood screws that you drive flush with the drill and screw-tip attachment. Allow the glue to dry overnight.
Tips and Warnings
- Sand and finish the step with stain and several coats of polyurethane sealer. Prime and paint the step with exterior wood primer and trim paint. Make additional steps of various heights for a variety of step exercises.
