Grilled hamburgers are one of America's favorite foods. When it comes to sandwiches, it's hard to beat a grilled beef patty on a toasted bun topped with various condiments. The grilled patty is even tasty by itself without a bun. Sometimes it's not convenient to grill a hamburger outside, due to bad weather or a simple lack of time. An electric grill can be helpful in such circumstances.

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat the electric grill by plugging it into an outlet. Most grills have a power light that turns on to indicate that the elements are heating.

Step 2

Combine the ground beef with the onion soup mix and the liquid ingredients, which include Worcestershire sauce and barbecue sauce, in a medium-sized bowl and mix well. Shape the mixture into four patties, each about 1/4 inch thick.

Step 3

Grill the patties for about 4 to 6 minutes on each side until they are no longer pink in the center. Use a meat thermometer to check the temperature. A hamburger is safe to eat when its internal temperature reaches 160 degrees F.

Step 4

Add the hamburger buns to the grill for the last 5 minutes of cooking, and turn them once until they are lightly toasted.

Step 5

Serve the patties on the toasted buns with various condiments such as catsup, pickles, relish, and lettuce and tomatoes.

Tips and Warnings

  • Grills having a power light usually turn off the light when the elements are fully heated, which indicates that the grill is ready for cooking. The "Betty Crocker Cookbook New Edition" recommends careful handling of the ground beef mixture as mixing too much can cause a tough hamburger. Also, the cookbook recommends moistening your hands with water while making the patties so the meat won't stick to them. Don't squeeze the hamburger with a spatula while cooking it because the juices will run out and the burger will be dry.
  • If the burger looks too pink, it is undercooked. Confirm the temperature is 160 F with the meat thermometer.
