Establishing a snowboarding stance is an essential part of the learning process. There are two dominant stances in snowboarding, known as regular and goofy. Regular riders make up the majority and prefer to ride with their left foot in the lead position. Goofy riders on the other hand prefer to lead with their right foot. While your lead foot will allow you to steer the snowboard, your back foot will provide increased stability during turns and maneuvers. To figure out which foot to use, REI recommends performing a basic falling test.

Falling Test

Step 1

Stand with your feet about shoulder width apart.

Step 2

Lean forward quickly until you begin to lose balance. Thrust one foot forward to prevent yourself from falling.

Step 3

Choose the foot you extended forward to lead your boarding stance.

Sliding Test

Step 1

Insert your feet into a pair of soft cotton socks. Walk to the edge of a wooden floor to begin the sliding test.

Step 2

Run forward a few steps before jumping onto the wooden floor. Bend your knees to lower your center of gravy. Extend your arms for balance as you slide across the floor.

Step 3

Lower your eyes to the floor to examine the position of your feet. Choose the foot you extended forward to lead your snowboarding stance.

Things You'll Need
