Lipodrene is a dietary supplement containing a variety of ingredients including ephedrine and caffeine. While it’s sold legally as a weight loss aid, Lipodrene can cause serious adverse effects due to the combination of stimulants it contains. Understanding the health risks of ephedrine can help you better determine whether Lipodrene is right for you. Before using Lipodrene for weight loss, consult your physician about its potential risks and benefits.

Ingredients

Lipodrene comes in several formulations, one of which contains the stimulant ephedrine. According to the Office of Dietary Supplements, ephedrine is associated with statistically significant weight loss in short-term studies. Like other stimulants, ephedrine acts on the central nervous system to produce its effects, which include reduced appetite and increased heart rate. Lipodrene also contains several other stimulants, such as synephrine, green tea extract and yohimbe. Additional ingredients include cassia, hoodia and naringen.

Health Risks of Ephedrine

Despite its positive short-term effects on weight loss, ephedrine can cause life-threatening complications in some cases. Mayo Clinic.com states that over 100 deaths and thousands of other adverse effects have been reported from people taking ephedra — a natural source of ephedrine. For this reason, all products containing Ephedra sinica (ma huang) were removed from the supplement market in 2004. According to Lipodrene.org, the ephedrine in Lipodrene is derived from Sida cordifolia, a plant that contains lower levels of ephedrine than found in ma huang. Still, the combination of ephedrine and other stimulants in Lipodrene may be dangerous in large doses or when taken by people with certain health conditions.

Prevention/Solution

Abstaining from the use of Lipodrene is the only way to avoid the risk of serious side effects completely. Talk to your physician before using Lipodrene, especially if you suffer from a chronic health condition such as hypertension or cardiovascular disease. When taking Lipodrene, start with the lowest effective dose and avoid combining it with other stimulants, such as caffeine. Stop taking Lipodrene and get emergency medical attention if you develop severe side effects such as chest pain or blurred vision. These could be signs of a stroke or heart attack.

Additional Considerations

Lipodrene is not a replacement for healthy lifestyle changes such as a nutritious diet and regular exercise. Like all supplements, Lipodrene may contain unknown ingredients or unreliable doses of active compounds due to lack of close regulation by the Food and Drug Administration. Buying supplements from trusted stores and manufacturers can help ensure quality.
