Catch and release is a popular fishing term, but it applies to football as well. Defenses thrive on rushing the quarterback and either getting a sack or forcing a turnover. Throwing the football quickly negates the pressure and can lead to a big gain. Good footwork, vision and throwing mechanics allow the quarterback to make a quick, accurate pass.
Step 1
Take the snap from center and make a quick three-step drop. Move left or right if there is an open receiver on either side. Throw off the back foot and step forward at the intended target when making the pass.
Step 2
Keep your head up at all times. Quickly scan the defense before taking the snap. Turn your head from side to side when dropping back to spot open receivers. Avoid rushing defenders by stepping up in the pocket for a quick throw. Do not focus on only one target. If the intended receiver is covered, forcing the pass can result in an interception.
Step 3
Bring the throwing arm up as you make the three-step drop. On a quick-timing route, throw to the designated area and let the receiver run to the football. Quick passes are usually short screens, slants or out patterns, so you do not need to bring the throwing arm all the way back before releasing the football. Cock the arm just past the helmet and flick the wrist for a quick throw.
Step 4
Do not waste time standing back in the pocket before passing the football. Roll out to the right or left to avoid taking the sack. Maintain good balance when throwing on the run. Do not throw off the back foot, even if it means making a quicker pass.
Tips and Warnings
- A quick pump fake to one receiver can leave another receiver wide open. Throw the ball out of bounds if all receivers are covered. Stepping into the throw provides power and accuracy.
- Quick passes that are thrown with too much power are difficult to catch. Properly elevate the throw to prevent tips and interceptions. Crossing the line of scrimmage before making the pass will result in a penalty.
