If you had too much sugar, whether from sugary drinks, candies or desserts, you may experience nausea and bloating, or just guilt. You cannot bring your blood sugar levels down by drinking water, but drinking enough fluids can help lessen the effects of the extra sugar you ate.
Sugar Intake
After you eat a food, the nutrients it contains are broken down by enzymes in your digestive tract. Starches from flours, pasta, rice and potatoes, as well as sugars from table sugar, candies and desserts, are converted to single molecules of glucose. The glucose enters your bloodstream and causes your blood sugar levels to rise. The more sugar you consume, the higher your blood sugar will rise. If you have starches along with your sugar, your blood sugar levels will rise even higher. Your body responds to the high level of sugar circulating in your blood by storing it as glycogen in your liver and muscles and as fat in your fat cells.
Drinking Water
Water is essential to life. Drinking enough water can help your body eliminate toxins. For example, your kidneys eliminate waste products in your urine, your skin does this through sweating, and your digestive system eliminates what is not needed in your stools. If you eat too much sugar, your body will hold on to this extra sugar and store it for later use in case of food scarcity. Drinking water can help you stay properly hydrated and help you feel slightly better after eating too much sugar, but it won't bring your blood sugar levels down.
Diabetes
If you have diabetes and eat too much sugar, your kidneys may spill out some sugar in your urine, but only if your blood sugar levels reach a very high level. If you have diabetes and have high blood sugar levels, drinking enough water is very important because you are at increased risk of dehydration with elevated blood sugars. Avoid eating too much sugar if you have diabetes because high blood sugar levels are very damaging to your kidneys, heart and eyes. Consult your doctor for help adjusting your diabetes treatment and better controlling your blood sugar levels.
Correcting High Levels of Sugar
The best way to lower your blood sugar levels and get rid of some of the extra sugar circulating in your blood is to exercise at moderate intensity. Go for a walk. Your muscles will utilize this extra sugar as a source of energy, and it will help you remove part of the sugar you consumed out of your bloodstream and bring your blood sugar levels down.
