Motivating yourself to go to the gym can be difficult, especially when you're tired or overworked. There's no doubt it's worth it, though. According to the Mayo Clinic, exercise improves your mood; it also combats heart disease and high blood pressure. It helps you sleep better and can even improve your sex life. By focusing on your goals, enlisting support from others and rewarding yourself for your progress, keep yourself showing up for your regularly scheduled gym workout.
Step 1
Put on music that makes you want to move. Whether that means blasting your workout mix through your headphones as you leave work or listening to a CD of dance tunes while you dig your sneakers out of your closet, music can make the difference between heading for the treadmill and heading for the couch.
Step 2
Invest in comfortable, attractive gym clothes that make you feel good about your appearance. Make going to the gym an excuse to wear a new outfit.
Step 3
Stock your gym bag with fancy toiletries in travel sizes. Tell yourself that you can use that pricey shampoo you love, but only if you work out first.
Step 4
Enlist a workout buddy; set definite days and times to meet at the gym.
Step 5
Keep a log of your progress, preferably with photos. Include your measurements and weight. Update it once per week. Seeing where you've been and how far you've come will help keep you from backsliding.
