Boxing is a sport that consists of many different elements working in unison to achieve success. Physical skills, mental toughness, endurance and long hours of training help give a boxer what he needs to win. The way you breathe in boxing is also a crucial element to keeping your muscles functioning and enabling yourself to execute your punches with the proper technique, accuracy and power. Proper breathing helps deliver oxygen to your muscles and your brain, which is especially important during times of physical exertion.
Step 1
Inhale through your nose, keeping your mouth closed. An open mouth leaves you susceptible to a broken jaw if you’re hit in the right spot.
Step 2
Exhale through your nose in a smooth, easy flow after each inhalation, and continue to inhale and exhale evenly throughout the match, whether you are attacking, defending or maintaining a neutral position.
Step 3
Expel a quick burst of air from your nose when you throw a punch, or multiple bursts when you throw combinations. Your punching breaths will sound like a snake hissing.
Step 4
Avoid holding your breath, as this may alter your punching rhythm or leave you lightheaded.
Step 5
Breathe in deeply and slowly through your nose, exhaling through your mouth, in the corner between rounds to help slow your heart rate. Listen to your trainer’s instructions to settle your breathing rate.
Tips and Warnings
- Practice nose breathing in all your boxing workouts to develop the proper muscles you’ll need during your matches.
