A toaster oven is basically a small electric oven, but the manufacturers of some commercial chicken pie products advise against heating the pie in a toaster oven. Because of the container some chicken pot pies come in, using a toaster oven to cook the pie is a possible fire hazard. Plastic containers, wax paper, plastic wrap and any paper products melt when cooked in a toaster oven. Only use a toaster oven to heat the pot pie if the manufacturer recommends it. Better yet, make a healthier homemade version of the pot pie with a whole wheat pie crust, lots of vegetables, white chicken breast meat, and either a low-fat homemade sauce or a can of low-fat cream of chicken soup. Place the ingredients in an aluminum or metal pie plate for safety's sake. They conduct heat and help brown the crust. Since the ingredients in a chicken pot pie are mostly already cooked, the goal is to cook the crust and just heat the inside ingredients.
Step 1
Preheat the toaster oven to 400 degrees F. It should take about five to 10 minutes to preheat the oven sufficiently to ensure the pot pie bakes evenly.
Step 2
Cut a slit in the middle of the crust with a knife to vent the steam.
Step 3
Place the chicken pot pie in the toaster oven on the baking tray.
Step 4
Cook the chicken pot pie for about 40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling inside is bubbling.
Step 5
Remove the pie from the toaster oven and insert the tip of a food thermometer into the middle of the pot pie to ensure it registers a safe internal temperature. The thermometer should reach 165 degrees F when the pie is cooked thoroughly.
Tips and Warnings
- Keep the pies warm until you are ready to serve them by turning down the toaster oven's temperature to 200 degrees F.
