How to Calculate Your Stride in Walking With a Weight Watcher's Pedometer

When using a pedometer, it is important to accurately calculate your stride length so the device can track your distance with close precision. When set-up properly, a pedometer can keep track of the number of steps you take each day and the distance that you walk. Walking is an exercise that the majority of people can perform because it is considered low-impact; therefore it is easy on the joints. Shape Up America recommends that adults take 10,000 steps per day to achieve a healthy and active lifestyle. The Weight Watchers pedometer can keep track of these measurements for you, helping you reach your walking and activity goals.

Step 1

Press the “menu” button on the front of your pedometer.

Step 2

Press and hold the “enter” button for approximately three seconds or until the word “manual” appears on the screen. Calculate your manual stride length by walking 10 steps, using your normal stride, marking from heal to heal. Measure the total distance and divide that number by 10. The result is your manual stride length. Press "up" or "down" on your pedometer and it will automatically show your average personal stride. You can then press "up" or "down" to select your exact stride length. Press "enter" to confirm and return to main stride screen.

Step 3

Press the “enter” button and then press "down" to "average" if you want to use an average stride length rather than determining your actual stride length. Use the "up" and "down" keys to select "male" or "female" and press "enter." Then enter your height. Press “enter” when you finish. After you press "enter," the pedometer will show you your average stride length based on your height and gender.
