Learning the proper technique is a key factor in staying on your feet as you snowboard down the hill. Heel side and toe side are two concepts that enable you to turn and make cuts safely and accurately. Turning on the toe side requires good balance and timing, and is preferable for some snowboarders because you can see the hill unfold in front of you with a little more clarity.

Step 1

Lock your bindings and get yourself moving straight down the hill. Sit back on your heels until you pick up speed.

Step 2

Bend your knees slightly and keep your torso straight with your arms out to the sides for balance.

Step 3

Move your hips forward and lean your upper body forward slightly so that your weight transfers onto your toes. The heel edge of your board will rise naturally.

Step 4

Lead with your front shoulder and direct your body into the turn. Keep most of your weight on your front foot so you have more control.

Tips and Warnings

  • Practice the movement while attached to your board, but before you get on the hill so you can get the feel before you try it for real.
