Licorice Extract
Licorice extract is a flavoring in licorice candy, but most candy-makers use artificial flavoring, not genuine licorice extract. The extract is an herbal supplement used for various cultural reasons. The supplement has had no evaluation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for effectiveness or use to treat any medical condition. Licorice has been used to help loosen congestion, treat inflammation in the stomach and to suppress excess scalp oil, according to Drugs.com. Do not use licorice extract without first talking with your doctor.
Pseudoaldosteronism
The sweet portion of licorice extract comes from a naturally occurring chemical called glycyrrhizin, which can cause cardiovascular side effects in some people. If you become hypersensitive to the chemical, you might develop high blood pressure or suffer heart attacks, headaches and fatigue, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. If you develop muscle pain, numbness, heart palpitations, have pain in your left arm, become short of breath and begin sweating, call 911 because you may be having a heart attack. Medical professionals do not recommend licorice extract for people with heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.
Anaphylaxis
Drugs.com states that licorice extract might cause allergic reactions in some people. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, a severe allergic reaction can cause an increased heart rate and palpitations. Heart palpitations from an allergic reaction require emergency medical attention. Unlike a moderate allergic reaction, anaphylaxis affects the entire body, sending it into a state of shock. Other symptoms of this type of allergy include the inability to breathe, lightheadedness, dizziness, pale skin, diarrhea, vomiting, mental confusion and facial swelling.
Considerations
Your doctor will advise that you stop using licorice extract to prevent and treat your symptoms. You might need medical tests to diagnose what type of heart condition is causing your symptoms. If heart palpitations are the result of anaphylaxis, you will require an injection of epinephrine to prevent further complications.
