Calcium is an important nutrient for people of all ages. Young children need the nutrient to support bone development and strength, while adults can use the mineral to maintain bone density and guard against osteoporosis and bone breakages. But calcium is also useful when used to neutralize stomach acid. Unfortunately, a byproduct of this process is sometimes bloating and gas, but some women may be able to use it for gas relief.
Calcium Carbonate Use
Calcium carbonate is often sold as a tablet and usually is marketed as an antacid. Its most common use as a supplement is to combat heartburn and stomach acid by neutralizing the acids. Calcium is alkaline and can quickly ease your upset stomach. However, this neutralizing process also produces some mild side effects.
Bloating and Gas
More often than not, taking calcium carbonate to treat stomach acid is going to result in gas and bloating. This side effect will be less extreme if you are taking calcium carbonate as a mineral supplement rather than a treatment for stomach acid. However, some experts argue that 1,000 milligrams of calcium taken daily can help relieve bloating caused by premenstrual syndrome, according to Parents.com.
Dosing
Calcium is most easily absorbed into the body in doses of 500 to 600 milligrams at a time. Take calcium carbonate with water or orange juice -- the citric acid in juice makes the calcium easier to absorb. Adults should not consume more than 2,500 milligrams between both natural calcium sources and calcium supplements. Talk to your doctor about proper dosing for children.
Considerations
Calcium carbonate is effective in temporarily reducing stomach acid by neutralizing it, but after its effects subside, it can actually stimulate more stomach acid production as the stomach overcompensates to try and digest the calcium. If you have chronic heartburn or other stomach problems, talk to your doctor prior to taking calcium carbonate. Do not exceed the recommended daily dosage without first getting clearance from a doctor.
