The word "chakra" comes from the ancient Sanskrit language and means "vortex" or "circle." The belief that the vortexes or chakras are centers of energy throughout the body began more than 4,500 years ago with the ancient people of India. They used exercise and herbs to treat illness along with meditation that focused on unblocking the chakras to help in healing. The seven major chakras begin at the crown of your head and end at the base of your spine. Kim Weeks, instructor and founder of Boundless Yoga, teaches her students how to unblock their chakras to create a positive flow of energy throughout the body.
Step 1
Sit in a comfortable chair in a quiet place. Relax your body and let both arms rest along your sides with your feet resting on the floor.
Step 2
Close your eyes and begin to breathe deeply. Continue to relax with each breathe as your clear your mind.
Step 3
Concentrate on the chakra at the base of the spine that represents self-love. Image a tight rosebud full of energy slowly opening. As the petals open, focus on the flow of love for yourself that the rose releases.
Step 4
Move to the next chakra along your spine, located about 2 inches below your belly button. This represents your emotions. See the happiness and contentment flow from the rosebud as it opens.
Step 5
Imagine the next chakra as a rosebud full of creative energy at the base of your ribcage. As the rose opens, see the energy escape from the rose to fill your body with creativity.
Step 6
Look to the chakra at your heart. This rose is filled with love for you and everything you do. As the bid opens, let the love flow and fill you with warmth.
Step 7
Move up to the next chakra along your spine located at your throat. This rosebud is filled with both truthfulness and understanding. Imagine the bud opening to guide your inner self to sincerity and understanding.
Step 8
See the rose located just behind your forehead filled with the spirit of intuition. As the petals unfold, become aware of your intuition becoming stronger.
Step 9
Move to the final chakra at the crown of your head. This rose is full of guidance provided by a higher power. As the petals open, allow yourself to accept the guidance provided. Become aware of yourself, your surrounding and begin to feel the contentment that this guidance provides you.
