How to Choose a Powerlifting Belt Size

Many weightlifters wear powerlifting belts when training and competing. Powerlifting belts provide back support and encourage you to maintain proper posture. The belts are available in nylon and leather and in widths between 4 and 6 inches. Because nylon belts place less pressure on your hips than leather belts, they may be a better choice for people who have previously suffered back injuries, according to Best Weight Training Equipment. After you have chosen your belt's material, you must select the appropriate size.

Step 1

Wear the clothing you typically wear while weightlifting.

Step 2

Measure your waist with a tape measure. This measurement is equal to your required powerlifting belt length. For example, if you have a 32-inch waist, you need a 32-inch powerlifting belt.

Step 3

Determine if you need a 4-inch-wide or 6-inch-wide powerlifting belt. In general, shorter people require the 4-inch belt and taller people need the 6-inch belt, although this varies based on personal preference. Try both widths to find a comfortable fit.

Things You'll Need
