The cost of a gym membership becomes a better investment when you take your time to choose a facility that will work best for you. Instead of jumping at the first offer you get, investigate several gyms in your area. Keeping a list of questions to ask staff at each fitness facility gives you a standard method of comparing available options to help you make your selection.

Do You Offer a Trial Period?

Most gyms allow potential members to try out the gym for free for a certain period of time. This period allows you to check out the amenities and get a feel for the environment of the gym. Ask about the length of the trial period and any limitations, such as restricted access to services.

What Are the Contract Terms?

A contract is often required by the gym. Find out the length of the contract and the terms of the agreement. Shorter contract lengths give you more flexibility if you decide you don't want to continue at the gym. Determine if there is any option for getting out of the contract early for any reason.

What Are the Payment Options?

Flexibility in payment options allows you to handle your gym fees in a way that works best for your budget. In some cases, you may receive a discount for paying a six-month or one-year membership in full. Gyms sometimes require you to set up monthly payments as an automatic withdrawal from your bank account.

What Amenities Are Offered?

To effectively compare the gyms you're considering, you need to know what each gym offers. Ask about the type of equipment the gym offers, as well as other amenities like group classes, a pool, saunas and personal training services.

What Are the Staff Qualifications?

A highly qualified staff provides you with a better gym experience. Trained fitness professionals are able to advise you on proper exercise and workout recommendations. The professional advice helps you reduce your risk for injury. Ask about the hiring practices and the fitness certifications of the staff to gain a better sense of the qualifications.

What Classes Are Available?

Gyms vary in the type of exercise classes available and the frequency of those classes. If you are interested in a group fitness experience, ask for a copy of the class schedule. Look over the times of each class you're interested in to determine if they fit into your schedule.

Are There Any Extra Fees?

The monthly fees to access the gym may not cover access to all amenities of the gym. Fitness centers often charge extra for some services like child care or certain fitness classes. A joining fee is possibly an extra fee. Know exactly how much you have to pay to join and access all of the services you wish to use.

What Are the Business Hours?

Convenience is a major factor in choosing a gym. Ask about the hours the fitness center is open to determine if you are able to make it to the gym on a regular basis. Gyms that are open 24 hours a day are becoming more common. Other gyms usually open early in the morning and are open until night.

How Busy Is the Gym?

Once you know the gym is open at times that work for your schedule, check the availability of machines during your preferred workout times. Ask when the gym is the busiest. These are the time periods when you are more likely to have a wait to use your favorite machines or get a spot in your preferred classes.

Are Any Discounts Available?

The gym provides the general rates for joining the gym, but discounts are often available. Businesses sometimes make arrangements with a local gym to get their employees discounts on a memberships. The gym may also offer you a discount to convince you to join. It never hurts to ask for a lower rate.
