The leg press is a large piece of gym equipment that’s designed for building up and strengthening your thigh muscles. Some leg press machines are built with weight stacks whereby you insert a metal pin like other gym machines, while some require you to load weight plates for resistance. Generally, the leg press machines where you sit on an angle use weight plates, and models where you sit upright use a weight stack.

Step 1

Ensure the handle or latch beside the seat is turned to the locked position, so the platform is secure at the top.

Step 2

Grab a weight plate with two hands and slide it over the peg on the right side of the machine. Push it all the way on, so there is no space between the plate and the machine.

Step 3

Grab another plate of the same weight with both hands and slide it onto the peg on the left side of the machine. Push it all the way onto the peg.

Step 4

Continue to add weight plates onto the pegs in the same fashion, until the machine is loaded with the amount of weight you want to use. Ensure you have an equal amount on both sides before you begin.

Tips and Warnings

  • Use less weight than you think you may need, if you aren’t sure, to avoid injury. Some models of leg press have the pegs at the top in the center of the machine, rather than on the sides.
