While eating a healthy, well-balanced diet can help ward off illnesses and infections, it can’t prevent everything. A well-balanced diet includes a variety of vitamins, antioxidants and other nutrients that your body and immune system rely upon. A vegan diet can provide plenty of nutrients, but it cannot cure fungal infections of any kind.
Diet
A diet that is rich in nutrients can help boost your immune system and help prevent certain health conditions. No matter how many vitamins you take or how many nutrients you get from your diet, it cannot stop a fungal infection from developing on your skin. A vegan diet has no connection with fungus any more than any other diet would. If you do follow a vegan diet, it’s important to include a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and nuts in your diet to help prevent certain vitamin deficiencies, such as iron, protein and other nutrient, that your diet may miss.
Fungal Infections
A fungal infection on your foot is also known as athlete’s foot. The actual medical term for this condition is tinea pedis. When the skin between your toes and on your foot becomes moist, fungus can begin to grow. The skin on your foot may become red and crack. You can also experience blisters and itchiness. A fungal infection can spread to your toenails, which causes your toenails to grow thick and become crumbly. If you scratch the itch, you can spread the fungal infection to your hands and fingernails.
Treatment
The only cure for a fungus infection on your feet is an anti-fungal medication. Once your doctor has determined that you have a fungal infection, he may recommend an anti-fungal foot cream. You can purchase anti-fungal foot creams over-the-counter or your doctor can prescribe a stronger anti-fungal cream. Do not attempt to self-diagnose or self-treat without the advice of your physician. It’s possible to develop a bacterial infection on the skin of your feet. In this instance, an anti-fungal cream will not help and your condition could worsen.
Prevention/Solution
If you are prone to athlete’s foot, there are some steps that you can take to help decrease the risk of future fungal infections. Take off your socks and shoes whenever possible so that your feet get plenty of air. Fungus, as well as bacteria, loves to hide out and grow in dark, moist places. Dry your feet completely after swimming or bathing. This helps decrease the amount of moisture on your feet and between your toes. Wear shower shoes or sandals when walking around in public locker rooms, pools and showers to decrease the risk of catching a fungal infection from someone else. Always wear clean, dry socks and shoes. Talk to your doctor about using a medicated powder on your feet to help reduce moisture and perspiration.
