Women transition into menopause in a range of ways. For some, the experience is relatively untroubled, while others develop a number of symptoms. Both ways are perfectly natural. There are also treatments and lifestyle changes that can ameliorate some of the symptoms.

Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the opening phase of menopause, which tends to effect women in their mid-forties and can last for as long as 10 years. During menopause, your ovaries gradually stop producing eggs. This results in falling levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. It is this drop that triggers the symptoms you are likely to experience.

Physical Symptoms

Perimenopause is marked by erratic menstrual cycles, and eventually menstruation without ovulation. Other symptoms include hot flashes, flushing skin, urine seepage, aching joints, vaginal infections, a rapid heart rate and night sweats. Sexual intercourse can feel different, as a result of thinner, less pliable, less well-lubricated genital tissues.

Emotional Symptoms

This period in your life can produce changes in your emotional state. You might experience irritability, depression and rapid mood swings. Insomnia, forgetfulness and loss of confidence can occur. It's also possible you might undergo a decline in sexual appetite.

Treatments

If you are suffering extreme versions of any of these symptoms, your health provider could prescribe hormones. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, medications such as antidepressants can also be used to treat some symptoms. Equally, consider some simple lifestyle changes. Take up yoga or tai chi relaxation exercises – these will help with hot flashes, sleep and a galloping heart rate. Dress in separates, so that you can shed a layer when a hot flash comes on. The University of Maryland Medical Center also recommends maintaining an active and regular sex life.
