The addition of meat turns nachos from a snack into a main course. Plain tortilla chips topped with cheese aren't as filling or as satisfying as nachos topped with seasoned hamburger meat crumbles. Browning the meat properly ensures it's cooked through and safe to eat. Add the meat on top the melted cheese or place the meat on the chips and top with cheese. The heat from the cooked meat will melt the cheese. Alternatively, you can place the nachos beneath the oven boiler for two to three minutes to melt the cheese.

Step 1

Place the beef in a large, nonstick skillet. Turn on the oven burner to medium heat.

Step 2

Break up the ground beef into pieces no larger than 1/4-inch, using a spoon. Stir constantly during the cooking time so the beef doesn't burn in the pan.

Step 3

Sprinkle one package of taco seasoning onto the meat as it begins to brown. Alternatively, sprinkle the meat with the chili powder, garlic powder, pepper flakes and oregano. Stir the seasoning into the meat.

Step 4

Brown the meat for eight to ten minutes or until the hamburger meat is evenly browned and no pink remains.

Step 5

Remove the beef from the skillet with a slotted spoon, leaving the grease in the pan. Sprinkle the beef over tortilla chips. Top with cheese and your preferred nacho toppings.

Tips and Warnings

  • Add diced onion and green pepper to the beef as it's browning for additional flavor. Diced tomatoes, guacamole and sour cream are suitable nacho toppings.
