Smart Shopping for Thermogenics

According to the "Supplement Business Report" published by Nutrition Business Journal, the US dietary supplement industry recently made an estimated $18.8 billion in annual sales in 2003. Thermogenics were on the list of supplements that were widely used. Thermogenics have been marketed as supplements to generate weight loss.

The term thermogenics in science literally means "heat generation." They work by increasing the metabolism of the body's fat tissue through heat generation. Some commonly known substances with thermogenic properties include ephedra, ginger, bitter orange, capsicum and caffeine.

Products that are typically classified as thermogenics alter the metabolism in your body which causes you to use more energy to burn more fat. These products tend to be alike in their active ingredients, although some variations have been seen.

What to Look for

Thermogenic supplements typically include a variety of herbal stimulants. These products, such as caffeine, help increase energy levels, suppress appetite and burn fat. If you are considering purchasing thermogenics to aid in weight loss, there are some factors that must be weighed:

1. Find out if the the product is a reputable brand, backed and tested by the FDA;
2. Study the research that supports the products claims;
3. Note whether there have been multiple clinical trials on this product; and
4. Make sure the product has contact information on the label or the manufacturer's box.

Common Pitfalls

The FDA has banned ephedra, saying "dietary supplements containing ephedra present an unreasonable risk of illness or injury, and should not be consumed." In addition to a risk of addiction, ephedra can cause such side effects as irregular heartbeat, insomnia and elevated blood pressure. Another downside: Once you stop using the stimulants, you will most likely regain the weight.

Though the term thermogenics refers an increase in heat production, the safest and most effective way to generate more heat and boost your metabolism is not through a supplement or drug, but with regular physical activity.
