Vitamin B12 Deficiency
A lack of vitamin B-12 can affect both your cardiovascular system and your nerves. People with a vitamin B-12 deficiency develop low red blood cell levels, also known as anemia. Vitamin B-12 deficiencies also cause damage to the nerves in your body, also known as peripheral neuropathy. This causes numbness and tingling, especially in your extremities. If the deficiency is not corrected, the nerve damage can be permanent.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Vitamin B-12 deficiencies can be caused by inadequate intake or absorption of this vitamin. Animal-based foods, such as meat, poultry, dairy products and fish are rich sources of vitamin B-12; a diet lacking these foods can result in a vitamin B-12 deficiency. Gastrointestinal disorders such as pernicious anemia can also contribute to a vitamin B-12 deficiency. This disorder can be diagnosed by measuring vitamin B-12 levels in the blood and by correcting the deficiency, either by changing the diet or using supplements.
