Enlightenment through Sufi meditation is achieved through releasing the concept of duality, or separateness of beings and objects. Sufi meditation seeks to enhance a sense of connection with the universe instead. The intention of meditation is to activate spiritual centers within the body to reach a deeper understanding of the true self and its quest for spiritual harmony. A characteristic Sufi meditation is "remembrance" or dhikr, a meditation to instill a constant awareness of the presence of God. "Toward the One on the breath" is a simple dhikr meditation practiced by Universalist Sufis.

Step 1

Breathe naturally. Think "Toward the One" with each inhalation and exhalation.

Step 2

Be conscious of each inhalation and exhalation when breathing in and out. Begin to balance the in and out breath so that each is the same length.

Step 3

Keep breathing calmly, thinking "Toward the One" with each breath. Continue for at least 10 minutes.

Tips and Warnings

  • Sufi meditation is best practiced with the guidance of a teacher. Suki orders have numerous ways of practicing dhikr, such as in silence, or vocally, alone or in groups and sometimes with movement.
