The list of top 10 diet programs changes frequently, according to current nutritional research and it follows fads just like the world of fashion. Some diet programs, such as Weight Watchers, have staying power and have remained top choices for dieters because they work. The top 10 diet programs can be broadly grouped into low-calorie diet programs, low-carbohydrate diet programs, lifestyle diets and meal plan systems.

Low-Calorie Diets

The only sure way to lose weight is to use more calories than you eat. The Jillian Michaels' weight loss program relies less on diet theory and more on reality. You reduce the amount of food you consume and you exercise to burn calories. The Biggest Loser Club, popularized by the TV show, offers a complete online experience that includes customized menus, expert advice and a buddy system to support your diet efforts.

Low-Carbohydrate Diets

Low-carbohydrate diets are also sometimes called "high-protein diets." One of the top 10 diet programs in this category is the Atkins Diet, which was developed by Dr. Robert C. Atkins. According to the Atkins website, reducing your consumption of carbohydrates on this diet encourages your body to produce less insulin and burn more stored fat. The popular South Beach Diet, developed by Dr. Arthur Agatston, is a nontraditional low-carb diet based on the glycemic index that stresses eating a balance of carbs and fats.

Lifestyle Diets

The Sonoma Diet bills itself as a lifestyle. This diet program is comprised of three waves, with the first wave lasting for 10 days and being the most restrictive. The Sonoma Diet allows foods generally found around the Mediterranean Sea, including olive oil and wine. According to the diet’s official website, the success of the diet program is based on the quality of food allowed on the program.

Meal Plan Diet Programs

Meal plan diets include the Nutrisystem, Medifast, Trim360 and Jenny Craig programs. Both the Nutrisystem and Medifast programs provide portion-controlled prepared meals that are based on the concept of the glycemic index. Eating foods with a low-glycemic index allows your body’s blood sugar levels to remain stable. The Jenny Craig diet program offers a personalized plan that includes portion-controlled meals and snacks so that you don’t have to do any calorie counting. The plan also offers one-on-one support to keep you on track. Trim360 offers low-calorie, high-protein meals and online videos and other support. Meal plan diet programs can work well if you stick with eating the meals that you receive and don’t cheat.

Point System Diet Programs

Weight Watchers has been around since the early 1960s and remains a top 10 diet program. The program is based on a point system that rates foods according to their nutritional value and calorie content, and you aren’t required to eat specific foods. Instead, the point system helps you choose your own foods. Weight Watchers includes meetings and support groups for its members.

Choosing a Diet Plan

There are hundreds of diet plans on the market, so what’s right for you takes some planning. The most effective diet program will be the one that you can stick with. You need to consider any costs involved for the program, such as membership fees or prepared meals. Find out what possible side effects a particular diet may have by consulting your doctor before starting any diet.
