It is never too soon to get your child involved in the sports and hobbies you yourself enjoy. Besides the quality time you will be having with your child, you will be teaching them skills and helping them form their own future fun filled activities that they too might one day pass on to their own children. There is nothing more nostalgic then seeing a father and his young son fishing by the lakeside to make you feel all warm and fuzzy. But, fishing is no longer just for men, so, you moms and daughters get out there and catch some fish too; and even better make it a family event. However, it may be difficult for a young child to use and manipulate one of your fishing rods, leading to frustration and zero enjoyment for the activity. This is why manufacturers of fishing equipment have come out with smaller-sized rods that you can adapt for use with a child.
Children's fishing rods are the smallest sized adult fishing rods you can find.
What to Look for
You might be inclined to buy one of the numerous novelty children's fishing rods on today's market, like the ones that are theme and character specific. However, these fishing rods are usually not made with the quality and durability needed to actually be successful at fishing, and the last thing you want to spoil your fun family time is a broken fishing rod or one that does not function properly. So, head to your local sporting good store or store that sells outdoor activity equipment and look for the smallest sized fishing pole they have. Generally, the smallest sized fishing rod that can be used, by a child ages three- to six-years-old, is one that is 5 feet long. Of course, you can probably have one custom made to more precisely fit the child as well.
A quality children's fishing rod will be lightweight for the child's ease and maneuverability, but sturdy enough to handle most kinds of fish. For a child's use, a rod that has a micro spinning combination and at least 110 yards of 6 to 8 foot of test line will definitely contribute to a good day of fishing. Another child friendly fishing rod feature is the trigger type reel. This will make casting easier for a young child that is learning how to fish. Also, make sure the children's fishing rod you choose has good "flex." A young child is no doubted going to test the strength and flexibility of their fishing rod, and one that is flexible will not break easy.
Common Pitfalls
Again, if fishing with your child is going to be a frequent activity, you will want to invest in a fishing rod that will be lasting and not break easy. The last thing you want to occur is having a cheap novelty children's fishing pole malfunction on what is supposed to be an enjoyable day. The child will wind up discouraged and possibly not interested in fishing. However, if fishing is not going to be a frequent activity, you might be able to get by with one of the cheaper novelty fishing rods.
