Once you discover rock climbing, it often can be hard to get away from it. Rock climbing is accessible to the beginner but also presents challenges that keep you coming back for more. Soon enough, you can find yourself wanting to train specifically for climbing. Building up those forearm and back muscles is a good way to boost your climbing skills. However, if you don't want to spend extra money on flashy training gear, it's easy enough to build your own. With some scrap wood, a few screws and some creativity, you can have your own personalized training equipment.
Step 1
Locate a place for your hangboard. Two trees growing close together is a good outdoor option. For indoor placement, choose a convenient doorway that you don't mind drilling into.
Step 2
Select 8 to 10 scraps of wood to use as handholds. Your holds should be no more than a few inches across. Choose a variety of shapes and sizes.
Step 3
Screw each handhold into one side of your 2 x 4 board using a drill or screwdriver. Use at least two screws per hold to prevent your holds from spinning. Spread your holds out evenly across the board so you can move freely among them.
Step 4
Nail one side of your hangboard into place using one nail and a hammer. This will allow you to easily level the board before attaching it permanently.
Step 5
Place your level on top of the board and adjust the board until it is level.
Step 6
Tack the other side of the board in with nail and hammer. Check again to make sure it is level. If the board is no longer level, remove the second nail and repeat steps 5 and 6 until the board is level.
Step 7
Screw the hangboard into place with a drill or screwdriver. Use at least three screws per side.
Tips and Warnings
- Test each hold once you have hung your hangboard. File down any rough edges that dig into your hands to make hanging easier.
