5 Things You Need to Know About Flu Remedies

1. Reduce Your Fever

One of the worst symptoms of the flu is a high fever. Along with that fever, you may feel like you have the chills. The first thing you should do is stay home and climb in bed under a warm blanket to help with the chills. A lukewarm bath or cool compresses could help bring down your temperature. Taking an over-the-counter fever reducer like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can also help bring down your high temperature. However, make sure you do not give aspirin to a child with the flu.

2. Get Rid of the Headaches

Often, a headache comes with the congestion you may get from the flu. The pressure in your forehead can cause a pounding headache. Just like a fever, acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help with a flu headache by reducing inflammation and easing some of the pain you feel. You can also try cold compresses on your forehead for headache relief. Taking a warm shower and breathing in the warm, humid air can moisturize your sinuses and may ease your headaches as well. Try elevating your head with an extra pillow or two when you are sleeping to clear your congestion.

3. Sooth Your Dry Cough and Sore Throat

With the flu, you often get a dry cough and a raw, sore throat. There are several things you can do at home to feel better. First, stay hydrated. Drinking lots of fluids will bring that much needed moisture to your lungs and throat. Sucking on throat drops or gargling warm salt water can sooth your irritated throat as well. For your cough, you can take an over-the-counter cough medication. Look for a cough medicine without antihistamines, which could further dry your nasal passages. Avoid giving cough medicine to your child or talk to your pediatrician before you do give your child any cough medicine.

4. Sleep Your Fatigue Away

When you catch the flu, your body is using all of your energy to fight the virus. As a result, you probably will feel really tired. The best way to get rid of the fatigue that comes with the flu is lots of sleep. While you are sick, avoid caffeinated beverages, which will keep you awake. Stay home from work or school and avoid tiring plane trips.

5. Talk With Your Doctor About Antiviral Medication

Most cases of the flu can be treated at home, but sometimes, if your flu is very bad or if you are in a high-risk group, you may want to talk to your doctor about antiviral medication. Medications like oseltamivir or zanamivir can treat an influenza infection if you take them within 48 hours of getting sick. These antiviral medications can reduce the severity and duration of the flu if taken properly. Talk with you physician to see if this is a good idea for you.
