Proper clothing and equipment keep your child safe and warm when she hits the ski slopes. Warmth while skiing allows your child's body to function properly and keep her energy levels high. Limiting the amount of skin that is exposed to the cold is also a key step in preventing frostbite. The protective clothing also reduces the chances of a sunburn while navigating the slopes -- even in cold weather, windburn and sunburn are possible. Layer on warm clothing that doesn't restrict your child's movement and control for an enjoyable day on the slopes.

Step 1

Dress your child in a thin first layer made from a sweat-wicking material for the shirt, pants and socks. This layer keeps any moisture from sweat or melting snow away from her skin to keep her feeling warmer.

Step 2

Add a second layer on top before your child's outerwear for more warmth, especially on colder days. Dress her in a thin fleece shirt or jacket. A pair of fleece pants is also an option if you want more warmth on the bottom. A second pair of socks keeps the feet warmer, but beware of the potential for bunching.

Step 3

Top the clothing layers with a waterproof ski jacket and snow pants. In cold temperatures, choose a jacket and pants that also include a layer of insulation so your child stays dry and warmer.

Step 4

Protect your child's extremities with waterproof and insulated gloves and a warm hat so heat doesn't escape from the head. Have her wear ski goggles to protect her eyes during skiing.

Step 5

Move indoors to remove a layer of clothing if your child gets too warm. Take off the second insulating layer so she is able to keep the moisture-wicking layer on.
