Ginger is the rhizome or stem of the plant Zingiber officinale, which is a member of the plant family Zingiberaceae. Ginger is known for its "heat" and is used as a spice in food and drinks. Ginger tea can relieve vomiting and calm upset stomach and gastrointestinal problems, making it a widely used treatment for nausea, according to the American Pregnancy Association and Medline Plus. The raw root of ginger is used to make fresh ginger tea and is available year-round.
Step 1
Select a piece of fresh ginger that is about an inch long. Peel the ginger with a paring knife and cut it into 1/8-inch pieces. The ginger can also be coarsely grated with a grater.
Step 2
Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a saucepan over high heat. Add the ginger to the pot once the water begins to boil, and reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and allow the ginger to simmer for 20 minutes.
Step 3
Remove the pot from the heat source and strain the tea into a cup through a strainer or cheesecloth.
